Surface Characteristics of 3D Printed Parts



Hello All, I’m a new engineering faculty member at a small college. We have a few ongoing projects that involve optimizing the surface characteristics of various 3D-printed materials, and I have 3 questions in that vein. I’d love input on any of them if you would care to contribute! The purchases would be primarily for analyze 3D printed samples, but would also be used for general QC on CNC milled components.

I’m considering getting a surface roughness meter to generate RA values for various printer parameters. I’m looking at the Mitutoyo 178-561-12A as the “name-brand” option? Are there other models or brands I should be considering?

Down the road, I’d like to look at using a high-quality 3D scanner to compare more complex printed parts against CAD originals, (and hopefully pick up some surface characteristics in the process) but that’s a lot more involved and more expensive. Do you have any thoughts on the validity of this approach now or later?

Should I consider a digital microscope ( Keyence VHX-7000 series, for example) as an intermediary step or instead of the probe-type profilometer?
