In October last year, ARM issued a 60-day notice to Qualcomm, announcing that it would terminate the license to Qualcomm’s chip architecture. Qualcomm, after that, retaliated with a lawsuit and won the case in December last year in the United States. However, the jury in the case could not reach a unanimous verdict, which paved the way for further litigation between the parties.
Now, it seems that all this is a fuss on both sides. Qualcomm CEO Cristiano Ammon publicly stated that ARM has now withdrawn its notice of termination of Qualcomm’s license agreement.
“ARM recently informed us that it is withdrawing the notice issued on October 22, 2024, and that it has no plans to terminate the Qualcomm Architecture License Agreement at this time,” Ammon said. ”
The dispute between Qualcomm and ARM stems from Qualcomm’s acquisition of Nuvia. ARM argued that Qualcomm’s use of Nuvia’s custom chip design without consent violated the previous licensing agreement between the two parties. Nuvia and ARM previously had licensing agreements that Qualcomm acquired after Nuvia, which could not be directly transferred to Qualcomm and would need to be renegotiated for licensing.
In this regard, Qualcomm believes that ARM ignores the architecture license agreement between the two parties and increases the license rate through this means.
In December 2024, the court ruled in favor of Qualcomm. However, there was no agreement on whether Nuvia violated its license agreement with ARM. However, this does not affect the final settlement between the two parties because if ARM cancels the authorization of Qualcomm, it will be a lose-lose result, and the probability of this happening is extremely low.
