What kind of ebooks are you looking to read ? If its just text then Kindle is fine; if there are complex color graphics or illustrations, then you are better off getting a tablet.

I got the kindle 4 from Croma Mumbai in December 2012. Still working as of now albeit a drop in battery life. It is still rocking on the original battery.
If e-ink reader is not a requirement, I would suggest going for an android based tablet or an iPad. I use my old iPad to read more eBooks as compared to my kindle because of the bigger screen and color output.
