I’m looking for recommendations for a new frontend solution for a system my organization has been using. Here’s a quick overview of what we currently have:
- Backend: SQL database.
- Frontend: Access, with forms, datasheets, and reports used to view, add, and edit records.
While functional, our current setup has limitations that have become increasingly frustrating:
- Form Design Challenges: Access forms can be clunky and restrictive, making it difficult to adapt to evolving user workflows.
- Cumbersome Integration with Excel: We recently added functionality to generate Excel forms for suppliers and import their data back into the system. While doable, this process is error-prone and difficult to maintain.
- Future Scalability: We want to expand the system with more user-friendly forms and tools, but Access doesn’t seem well-suited for these goals.
What We’re Looking For
We want to transition to a frontend solution that meets the following criteria:
-
Ease of Form Creation: Flexible and intuitive form-building tools to accommodate changes and additions.
-
Enhanced Features: More robust tools for managing and interacting with the database.
-
Longevity: A platform with strong support and a low risk of becoming obsolete.
We’ve explored the Microsoft Power Platform, specifically Power Apps, but it has some drawbacks for our use case:
- It seems designed more for simple, web-based interfaces, and replicating the functionality of a desktop app (e.g., multiple windows) is difficult.
- The platform’s item and throughput limits might pose issues as we scale.
We’re open to learning new tools and platforms but want to ensure we’re investing in the right solution. Have you faced similar challenges, and if so, what solutions have worked for you?
I’d love to hear any advice, suggestions, or experiences you might have!
