Raapidus, a Japanese semiconductor company, plans to provide Broadcom with 2nm chip samples in June 2025 and achieve mass production in 2027. The company hopes to challenge industry leaders such as TSMC in the high-end chip market.
Headquartered in Chiyoda, Tokyo, Rapidus was founded in 2022 with the full support of major Japanese companies such as Toyota, Sony, and SoftBank. The company has established a cooperative relationship with the American technology giant IBM, focusing on developing and producing advanced 2nm technology chips. At the end of last year, Rapidus secured its first extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine from Dutch supplier ASML and expects to complete the installation by the end of March this year, laying the foundation for subsequent production.
Rapidus predicts that the demand for AI chips will continue to climb as AI technology booms. The company aims to leverage its technological strengths to capture a significant share of this emerging market. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang also said that to diversify the supply chain, he would not rule out cooperating with Rapidus in the future for AI chip foundry and expressed confidence in its technical strength. Rapidus’ rapid deployment and large-scale investment show that Japan is actively reinvigorating its competitiveness in the global semiconductor field and seeking to occupy a place in cutting-edge technology.
