How to get started with the 3DMakerPro Moose Lite

Hey all. I didnt expect this scanner to be some high end professional device, but im struggling to even get this thing to pick up on anything. Its all extremely dark/majority just black in the viewing screen on the JMStudio program. Have adjusted settings with no luck. Do i need to have extremely good lighting? How good does the lighting need for be? The only time i get any sort of “shapes” seen in the scanner view window is if i point it at the ceiling light
