Is there a web browser extension that blocks known tracking cookies, but leaves advertising images etc unblocked?
It’s easy to find an extension that blocks trackers. Some of them are not called ad blockers. However, since they carefully block the whole tracker, you often don’t see the advert either :-).
A lot of news sites then tell you to turn off your “ad blocker” for their site – which would turn the tracking back on. So blocking only the tracking cookies seems a useful niche case, at least in my head.
A user might like the idea that Microsoft Edge blocks Google trackers (whether it actually does or not), but get fed up with the current version of Edge (“the AI-powered browser”). I would prefer Firefox, but some users might find it easier to switch to Chrome. Presumably, an extension could make Chrome behave like default Firefox in this sense:
What Enhanced Tracking Protection blocks
Firefox uses a list of known trackers provided by Disconnect. By default, Firefox blocks the following types of trackers and scripts: … Cross-site tracking cookies …
For examples of a “tracker blocker” which “just happens” to block third-party adverts on most websites, you can see the Disconnect browser extension, or set Privacy to “Strict” in Firefox, or open a Private Browsing Window in Firefox :-).
