Accepted a Metrology Internship — Any Resources/Advice?

Hello everyone, recently I (22yo) accepted an internship in metrology (specifically in engineering), and while I’m really excited about the opportunity, I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t feeling unsure about it.

A bit about my background: In high school, I was in a dual enrollment college program where I earned certifications in Mechanical Engineering Technology and Mechanical Engineering Technology: Drafting. My original plan was to go to college for Engineering, but COVID hit during my freshman year, and I really struggled with online classes. I ended up switching to Public Health, graduating early, and kind of just rolling with the punches. From there, I went straight into a Master’s in Information Management and graduated early again. While I’m proud of how far I’ve come, I can’t help but feel like I’ve lost touch with the engineering foundation I had in high school.

What’s adding to the doubt is that the manager in the department I’m leaving was really upset when I told them I was switching to Metrology. They said I was “making a huge mistake,” (without elaborating on why it was a mistake) and even though I tried not to let it get to me, their VERY surprising reaction is still lingering in my head. Mainly because I am aware my path to this opportunity has been extremely unorthodox.

I know internships are for learning, but I’d like to do everything I can to prepare and build my confidence. Are there any books, websites, or other resources you’d recommend for someone diving into metrology?
