I’m an Engineer who recently retired and is CAD fluent/experienced. I used to have a shop to execute the designs, now it will be me, in the garage. I pulled the pin to buy a Bambu Labs X1C, bundled with the AMS feeder accessory. And a pretty broad range of filaments to get started.
I plan on restifying, (restifying is restoring them to good working order and cosmetically correct. But allows the use of modern components/technologies as opposed to restoration where you stay with everything original), several older vehicles, for which part availability is marginal at best. So, I will be printing rectification parts for my 1994 JDM kei class pickup, a 69 F250, an 89 Big Bronco, and my 08 Ram 3500, Mega Cab (Mega is quite literal, the cab is huge, and parts are rare), to start.
I am looking at higher niche hobby grade scanners. I will need to scan everything from large body panels, frame suspension and brakes so a couple of meters in length and width, to small plastic clips which hold trim, and headlight bezels and are about a centimeter cubed. Accuracy needs vary based on the size of the scan. the clips, etc. which are small accuracies of +/- 0.05mm. The body panels, frames, motor and suspension mounts, etc., can be +/- 1-mm. I can do physical measurements once I have a 3D model and verify/adjust as needed.
I live in a small rural mountain town in east-central Idaho, big towns are several hours drive away, over mountain passes. So, having someone come in and do scans is not practical. So, I need to gear up to do it myself. Part of the driving force is that parts I can order will take at least two days to arrive, and I’d like to be able to reverse engineer, and print things to get them in a timely manner. And, realistically all of my vehicles are getting old enough that vehicle specific parts are becoming hard, to impossible to source. And very expensive if you can. A pack of five trim clips for the JDM truck are $30 from Japan and take several weeks to arrive.
So, any recommendations for a scanner or scanners? I’d prefer one scanner to do it all. But will get two if needed. Budget is around $1500 to $2000, whether that is for one or two scanners. And, whatever I get needs to be available online.
