DIY handheld 3d scanner camera selection

Hi everyone,

I am currently looking at making my own handheld 3d scanner which will use blue laser lines as its method of measuring (Similar to HandyScan 3D). I am wondering if anyone has any information on what cameras would be best to use for this application.

From my research, the best camera specifications should be: – Monochrome – Global Shutter – Anything greater then 2MP should work good

Since these cameras would be connecting to a computer, I think id be best for the camera to have a USB 3.0 connection. (If there are other methods/connections which can be used let me know)

I am currently looking into a See3CAM_CU512M or a See3CAM_CU55M which has all the qualities mentioned above (5MP). There is also the SeeBCAM CU135M which is 13MP, however, I think having 2 of these cameras would be too much computation and bandwidth load for its 8 MP gain.

If anyone has any suggestion on what type of cameras to use, or any information on 3d scanning cameras, I’m all ears!

Thanks
