thunderbolt – Options in running multiple displays over a single USB-C port

So my questions isn’t whether you can. As this is an incredibly popular setup. But what it entails. Correct me if I’m wrong, but

1. MacOS doesn’t support DisplayPort MST.
2. There’s a thing called DisplayLink that kind of emulates display output over USB

Which begs the question. Are these USB-C hubs running DisplayLink when using MacOS and if not, what technology is it?
