Scanner for retrofits and new construction of piping systems

I’ll preface by saying I am an idiot with no idea how any of this technology works, but my boss has tasked me with doing some research on 3D scanners and total stations for oil and gas piping construction.

We are an oil and gas construction company in Alberta, Canada. We, and most other companies in our area have done all of our pipefitting and measuring by hand for years, but recently bigger project companies have moved into the area and we are finding it harder and harder to compete with them and the tech they’re using to measure and design piping systems.

What hardware/software is going to be sufficient to scan existing piping for retrofits and do layout/modelling for new sites. Think oil/gas well sites to larger field facilities like gas plants and oil batteries. Anything from 1/2” to 24” piping. We are currently using software like blue beam/spoolfab/Acorn, is there compatibility between scanning tech and these programs?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
