I have a part that I’m trying to make that has the Surface Profile call out below. The problem that I’m having is that Datum B and Datum C are both formed edges. If we have any deviation in bend location, length or angle will shift this whole “hole” pattern and but it outside the unilateral tolerance zone.
I’ve talked with the design engineer and they’ve verified that the design intent behind this call out was just to ensure that the holes don’t become oversized and that there is a minimum amount of material left between the holes for safety since this is an operator protective structure.
I suggested that we just remove Datum B and Datum C from the feature control frame. Our QA Tech assured me that we would still fail because the data would still be aligned using datums A, B and C even if the feature control frame didn’t have all three called out.
I obviously am lacking some knowledge or understanding but I don’t know what to google or what section of the GD&T spec would help clarify things, and the QA Tech said that he understands it but not at a level where he can make it make sense to me.
