Measuring distance between burrow entrances from underwater TV surveys

I am a biologist and we conduct a survey for Nephrops (Norway lobster) by counting their burrows using an underwater camera attached to a sledge. We are interested in measuring burrow size, but have run into the problem of perspective. These animals make complex burrows with more than one entrance and we would like to measure the distance between entrances. On the images we have laser lines 1 meter apart, which should be helpful in determining the size of the burrow. Note that the burrows can lie in any plane of the image, so one entrance could be at the bottom of the image and the other near the top. Here is an example image with the laser lines and a red line indicating a distance to measure. I know this is all assuming a flat plane, which it is not, but we have to make some assumptions. What tools are available to help with this? Ideally, I would write an R script where I could provide the X,Y coordinates of two entrances and the distance would be estimated, but I am at a bit of a loss as how to do that.
